 | Camden Town shopping | |
Shopping in Camden Camden Town is the alternative shopping mecca of London. Well it is in fact the alternative shopping mecca of the UK, Europe and some may say world wide too.
Camden Town consists of several markets, a busy high street and lots of bustling pubs and clubs. The Stables Market is home to most of the bigger well known alternative fashion shops including Cyberdog, The Black Rose, Spank and Punky Fish. The Stables Market is not really a market at all, it is an alternative shopping centre with everything from clothing and food to furniture and wooden ornaments. There is something for every one. It encompasses so many styles: Goth, Cyber, Retro, Rasta, Hippie, Rock, Psychedelic, Ethnic, Punk. | |
| The Lock Market is a more traditional market. It has actual market stalls selling much more 'Craft' objects. Where the stables is the centre for alternative fashion, The Lock is the centre for the artisans. There are several small stalls selling items and gifts made from silver to circuit boards. Like the Stable's, there is lots of food on offer. The Lock Market also has several small shops within its perimeter selling clothing, music and gifts.
Other Markets in Camden include: The Green Market which is immediately to the right as you exit Camden Town tube station; The Canal Market which is over the canal bridge on the right hand side if walking from the tube station; The Electric ballroom market, specialising in Punk and Goth clothing; The vegetable market which is located on Inverness street, this is a typical market selling veg and cheap sportwear as you would find in any UK town.
Then there is the bustling high street. There are several great Tattoo and piercing shops, and lots of shoe shops (all selling the same shoes!) but generaly your best bet is to go to the Stables for clothing. Unfortunately, the cheap image of the high street with its nasty London underground T-shirts and boxer shorts everywhere does bring the image of the Stables and Lock Market down slightly.
But don't be put off, there is so much to see once you get into the two main markets, the Stables and Lock. If you have never been to Camden shopping before make sure you leave time to explore the end of the Stables Market. Leave time to stroll into the Catacombs, the retro clothes and furniture shops, have a tea in the Moroccan cafe and seek out the african artefacts including wooded carved zulu warriors! |
