| | The 1980`s was a time of change. For the first time young adults and teenagers were expressing themselves in lots of different ways, through fashion, music and film. Instead of following set trends, they were reaping the rewards of the previous generations` flower power, and now following whatever fads they wanted to. Cult films like Sixteen Candles, Footloose, Pretty in Pink and The Breakfast Club. Whether you were the jock, the rocker, punk girl or princess, there were looks and sounds for you. All kinds of music was topping the charts, from punk bands to glam rock to pop and synth-sounds, no-one knew which genre would get the number 1 spot next. The 80`s decade was one of the most expressive in fashion history, with New Romantics, Punks and Power-dressers all out in force. In the 1980`s the financial world was booming, but even in the recession you can still get that 80`s look at an affordable price.
The most popular look of the time included ra-ra skirts, Leg Warmers, lycra and bold colours; in essence, the Fame wardrobe. As soon as the film erupted on screens world-wide it triggered a new awakening of people who wanted to be stars, they wanted to sing, dance and most importantly, look great. Soon everyone was getting involved, from actors to pop-stars. For any fashionista of the 1980`s, Leg Warmers were the must-have accessory. Coupled with Neon Tights, a fitted leotard or skirt and the trademark over-sized sweater, dance-studio chic was definitely fashion forward. For the Madonna lovers, the fad was all rosary beads, lacy gloves and black leggings and punks wore plaid and black.
For the go-getting businessmen and women of the day, the look was all about power and androgyny. Women wore straight-leg fitted trousers and skirts coupled with frilly blouses and strong-lined jackets with shoulder-pads for an air of masculinity. Similarly to the Fame-look makeup was strong with bold pink blushers, blue eye shadow and lip-liner and hair was big no matter your age.
